The Journey to Miracle River

These drawings constitute two years of unrelenting hard work, holed up in my studio at the drawing table.  It’s the place I like to be.  The act of laying graphite down onto paper is personal, intimate and immediate. Layers are stripped away and it is just me, the pencil and the paper.    When I put pencil to paper there is no disguise. I am exposed and vulnerable – I am free.  The intimacy and immediacy of drawing connects me to life, to its frailty, its grandeur and everything in between. This series of drawings started out addressing the idea of longing - wanting something else, something different, wanting what we don’t have.  It’s always distant, beyond reach.   The desire, or longing, for what we don’t have can be so intense we are willing to risk hazardous travels in an attempt to get it. The first drawing in the series was of a raft.  I built the raft and then drew the raft that I built.  The raft image is a metaphor for traveling to that distant place – the place where we can obtain what we long for.   Then came the water, skies and clouds. – the illusive, the unobtainable. The longing turned into dreaming.  My journey started out with longing, rendering details of strands of rope, coarse bark and crisp shadows and ended up with dreaming, drawing expanses of water, vast skies and ever changing clouds.  The one constant that sustained me during these travels was putting pencil to paper.
